Phlebotomy Course (PLT) – starts October 5, 2020

Objectives

The main objective of the course is to prepares individuals, under the supervision of physicians and other health care professionals, to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures. Includes instruction in basic vascular anatomy and physiology, blood physiology, skin puncture techniques, venipuncture, venous specimen collection and handling, safety and sanitation procedures, and applicable standards and regulations. A face to face interaction with educator will be utilized for the course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of the course, students will verify in-patient identification before the blood collection procedure and how the identification of out-patients differs from that of in-patients. Students will describe patient preparation and positioning and assemble the evacuated tube system. Students will apply a tourniquet and list three consequences of improper application. Students will identify items and veins used for blood collection, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Students will experience skills in a well-equipped laboratory. The skilled students practice includes, but are not limited to: Routine Venipuncture, Dermal Puncture, Venipuncture Complications, Blood Collections, Special Collections, Specimen transport, and Arterial Blood Collection.

Dates for online sessions and in-person labs will be announced a week before the start

Type of Certificate

Upon the completion of the course students will receive a certificate of completion from Pioneer Institute, which they can use to secure employment as a phlebotomist. It is up to the student to decide whether they want to take the state exam for phlebotomy, however, it is not a requirement to secure employment.
